One of these key tools is the "Sistema de certificados de ahorro energético" (CAE), promoted by the Spanish  "Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico"  (MITECO).

The CAE is an electronic document that accredits the final energy savings achieved through the implementation of energy efficiency measures, such as the improvement of thermal insulation, the installation of efficient lighting systems or the optimisation of industrial processes. Each CAE represents 1 kWh saved and can be traded or used to meet energy saving obligations.

How the CAE system works ?

The process of obtaining a CAE is based on three fundamental steps:

1. Implementation of energy efficiency measures: Companies, public entities or individuals carry out actions that reduce their energy consumption, such as equipment or infrastructure renovations.

2. Independent verification: An accredited auditor reviews and validates the energy savings achieved.

3. CAE issuance: After validation, MITECO issues the certificates, which are registered in the Electronic Platform of the CAE System.
